Specimen Requirements

NOTE: This test is for infection prevention purposes ONLY.  

 

Acceptable Specimens:

Rectal: 1 ESwab per test request in a sterile transport tube
Stool: 0.3 g to 2 g of fresh stool in Cary-Blair transport media
Urine: ≥5 mL of urine in a BD VACUTAINER grey-top C & S preservative tube or a in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container.

 

Unacceptable Specimens:
Specimen collected with ESwab Collection Kit is unacceptable if received without fluid or swab in the transport tube.

 

Collection Procedure:

 

Note: Specimen source is required.

 

Rectal Swab

1. Pass ESwab beyond anal sphincter.

2. Rotate ESwab and withdraw.

3. Return ESwab to culture transport tube.

4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

 

Stool

1. 0.3 g to 2 g of fresh stool in Cary-Blair transport media.
2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

 

Urine

1. Aseptically collect 3 mL of urine in a BD VACUTAINER grey-top C & S preservative tube or a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
