Reference Values
Pleural Fluid - Glucose <60 mg/dL is indicative of complicated parapneumonic effusions.
Peritoneal Fluid - Glucose normally equivalent to plasma glucose. Will be less than concurrent plasma value in peritoneal bacterial infections.
Pericardial Fluid - Fluid to serum glucose ratio <0.3 is indicative of bacterial infection.
Pancreatic Cyst Fluid - Glucose concentrations have been shown to be a useful aid for distinguishing mucinous from non-mucinous cysts. Low glucose concentrations in a pancreatic cyst fluid (< 40-50 mg/dL) is suggestive of a mucinous cyst. However, body fluid glucose concentrations may be decreased due to increased cellular metabolism and should be interpreted in the context of blood glucose concentrations and in conjunction with other laboratory and clinical findings.
