Reference Values

Ratio of pleural to serum amylase >1.0 is indicative of pancreatic excretions in the pleural fluid.

Ascites Fluid amylase is normally equivalent to serum levels, but elevated levels are indicative of pancreatitis or pancreatic secretions.

Ratio of JP fluid to serum amylase >3.0 is indicative of pancreatic fistula.

Pancreatic cyst fluid amylase <250 U/L is indicative of benign serous cyst.

Test performed in BJH Core lab. If specimen is received in a VACUTAINER, check procedure to confirm suitability. Centrifuge upon receipt. Apply blue tape to specimen aliquot tube. Deliver to the Cobas8000 for analysis. Completed specimens are stored frozen for 30 days.
