This test should should not be requested on patients who have recently received methotrexate or other folic acid antagonist.

 

Specimen is stable for 2 days refrigerated.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Preferred:
Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin)

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Spin down unopened (vacuum intact) tube within 45 minutes of draw.

2. Label specimen as plasma.

 

Note:  Plasma is stable for 2 days refrigerated or 4 weeks frozen.  Testing will not be performed on specimens more than 2 days old.

 

Alternate (Non-Hospital Patient):

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Gold top, serum gel

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Collection Instructions: 

1. Spin down unopened (vacuum intact) tube within 45 minutes of draw.

2. Label specimen as serum.

 

Note:  Serum is stable for 2 days refrigerated or 4 weeks frozen.  Testing will not be performed on specimens more than 2 days old.
