Specimen Requirements

Forms: Cytology Request Form in Request Forms in Special Instructions.

Preferred: Brushings

Specimen Type: Bronchial, esophageal, gastric, renal, etc.

Container/Tube: Screw top container with PlasmaLyte or Cytolyt fixative. 

    NOTE: Always use PlasmaLyte for specimens to be shared with Microbiology testing.

Specimen Volume: Adequate sampling

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect specimen using a brush collection device.

2. Agitate brush into container.

3. Remove wire brush by snipping wire and drop into the container.
4. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and source of specimen.
