Test Code CREAT Creatinine, Plasma
Performing Laboratory
NRL-Chemistry
Methodology
Rate/Colorimetric
Includes calculation of the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
Calculation using CKD-EPI 2021 study equation:
GFR = 142 min (standardized Scr/K, 1)α x max (standardized Scr/K, 1) -1.200 x 0.9938 Age x 1.012 [if female]
The equation requires three variables:
- Serum, or plasma, creatinine (Scr)
- Age in years (18 years or older)
- Gender (male or female)
- Race is not included when using the BJC Cerner eGFR calculation.
Note: This test is also available as part of #BMP Basic Metabolic Panel, #COMP Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, and #RENAL Renal Function Panel. See Common Panel Test Combinations in Special Instructions to avoid duplicate test requests when multiple panels are ordered.

Estimated glomerular filtration rate is determined by the 2021 CKD-EPI equation recommended by the National Kidney Foundation (A Unifying Approach to GFR Estimation: Recommendations of the NKF-ASK Task Force on Reassessing the Inclusion of Race in
Diagnosing Kidney Disease, JASN 2021). The CKD-EPI equation should not be used for patients with unstable renal function and has not been validated in children and those over 70.
