Methodology

Flow Cytometry

Useful for monitoring HIV infection and may be used after initial T & B lymphocyte profile.

Note: WBC count is only performed if WBC and lymphocyte counts are not available.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw. 

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA) and yellow top (ACD)

Specimen Volume: Full tubes

Collection Instructions:

1. Do not refrigerate or freeze.

2. Send specimen in original tubes.

WBC: 5.0-10.0 K/mm3
Lymphocytes %: 16.0%-52.0%
Lymphocytes #: 1,200-3,500 cells/µL
Helper T-cells (CD4) %: 29%-59%
Helper T-cells (CD4) #: 348-2,065 cells/µL
