Methodology

Kinetic/Photometric
AST is an enzyme which may be elevated in a variety of conditions such as liver disease or myocardial infarctions.

Note: This test is also available as part of #COMP Comprehensive Metabolic Panel and #HEP PNL Hepatic Hepatic Panel (Liver Profile). See Common Panel Test Combinations in Special Instructions to avoid duplicate test requests when multiple panels are ordered.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
 

Preferred:

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Spin down unopened (vacuum intact) tube within 2 hours  of draw.

2. Avoid hemolysis.

 

Alternate (Non-Hospital Patient):

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Gold top, serum gel

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Spin down unopened (vacuum intact) tube within 2 hours of draw.

2. Avoid hemolysis.

 

Reference Values

≥10yrs:7-40 U/L

5-10yrs: 5-50 U/L

2-5yrs: 10-55 U/L
1mo-2yrs: 10-60 U/L

<1mo: No reference range
