Methodology

Kinetic/Photometric
ALT is an enzyme often elevated in conditions which affect the liver such as hepatitis, infectious mononucleosis, etc.

Note: This test is also available as part of  #COMP Comprehensive Metabolic Panel and #HEP PNL Hepatic Panel (Liver Profile). See Common Panel Test Combinations in Special Instructions to avoid duplicate test requests when multiple panels are ordered.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
 

Preferred:

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Spin down unopened (vacuum intact) tube within 2 hours of draw.

2. Avoid hemolysis.

 

Alternate (Non-Hospital Patient):

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Gold top, serum gel

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Spin down unopened (vacuum intact) tube within  2 hours of draw.

2. Avoid hemolysis.

 

Reference Values

Males

≥1 year: 5-50 U/L

<1 year: No reference range

Females

≥1 year: 1-45 U/L

<1 year: No reference range
