Specimen Requirements

Procedure:
1. Obtain 1 ampule of TRH from pharmacy (500 µg).
2. Draw baseline thyroid-stimulating hormone.
3. Inject intravenously (IV) 500 µg of TRH over a 1 minute period.
4. Thirty minutes after start of IV injection, draw another TSH level.
5. Optional-60 minutes after start of IV injection, draw another TSH level.

Collection Instructions:

1. Indicate time of draw on request form (baseline, 30-, or 60-minute).

2. Label each specimen appropriately (baseline, 30-, or 60-minute).

Reference Values

0.3-5.0 mIU/mL

A normal response is a rise in the 30- minute specimen at least 5 mIU/mL above the baseline TSH value. Hypothalamic disease typically results in a late peak at 60 minutes.
