Methodology

Oxygen Rate

Note: This test is also available as part of #BMP Basic Metabolic Panel, #COMP Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, and  #RENAL Renal Function Panel. See Common Panel Test Combinations in Special Instructions to avoid duplicate test requests when multiple panels are ordered.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin)

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Fasting (12-14 hour)

2. Spin down unopened (vacuum intact) tube within 45 minutes of draw.

3. Avoid hemolysis.

4. Label specimen as plasma.

 

Alternate (Non-Hospital Patient):

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Gold top, serum gel

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Fasting (12-14 hour)

2. Spin down unopened (vacuum intact) tube within 45 minutes of draw.

3. Avoid hemolysis.

4. Label specimen as serum.

 

Alternate (Outreach-Home Health):

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Gray tube (Na Fluoride/K+ Oxalate)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Fasting patient preferred

2. Draw and send specimen in original tube

3. Avoid hemolysis

 

 

Reference Values

 

PLASMA OR SERUM

1mo-160yrs: 70-199 mg/dL

2 dys-1mo: 50-80 mg/dL

0-2dys: 40-60 mg/dL

 

 

Note: Either a fasting plasma glucose > 126 mg/dL or a random glucose >200 mg/dL plus symptoms is diagnostic for diabetes when confirmed on another day.  Fasting values >100 mg/dl but <125 mg/dl are diagnostic for impaired fasting glucose.

 

Critical values (automatic call-back): ≤50 mg/dL or ≥450 mg/dL
